An ethos of caring for its workforce is being proven in practice at one of the building services industry’s prestigious manufacturers.

Family-owned and run Gilberts (Blackpool), Britain’s leading air movement specialist, has just completed its second year completely accident-free(*). The achievement comes despite enhanced and more pro-active reporting and managing procedures across the 93,500 sq ft factory and warehouse, which covers two sites across the road from each other. And it is a heavy user of aluminium, steel and dyes for processing the metal and utilising metal presses, transport buggies and forklift trucks.

“According to the Health & Safety Executive, 70,000 workers suffer an injury at work each year; the metallic manufacturing industry is among the top five sectors for risk,” says Ian Rogers, Gilberts Sales Director. “We are rightly proud and believe therefore that it’s impressive that, as a company, we have not had one reportable accident for two years running.

“We are family run, and have a ethos that our employees are part of that extended family. We operate to levels that mirror BS OHSAS 18001. We have also put into place a pro-active, corrective regime to improve our safe systems of work, and to ensure the safety and wellbeing of staff.”

Gilberts’ caring attitude is reflected beyond its health & safety record: almost 25% of its workforce has been with the company at least 20 years.

Founded over 50 years ago, Gilberts is unique in undertaking all aspects of its production in house, from design to formation of dyes to manufacture. It is also unique in the air movement industry in having, in house, its own advanced test centre- the entirety of which was designed and built using internal expertise.
