Gilberts is playing a vital background role in preparing our NHS workforce of the future at Sheffield Hallam University. We’ve delivered all the ventilation supply and extract grilles and diffusers for the state-of-the-art refurbishment scheme within RIBA award winning Heart of the Campus building on Collegiate campus.
Our air movement grilles and diffusers are central elements of the HVAC throughout the areas now being utilised for the University’s health and social care training spaces.
The scheme includes a 12-bed ward giving students and allied health professions a realistic clinical setting, working with lifelike human simulators as patients.
The Wing also includes an accessible apartment, replica GP surgery and rehabilitation suites. The facility will enable nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and diagnostic imaging students to gain significant real-life experience of cross-discipline working practices. It bridges the gap between on-campus and in-practice learning.
Mechanical and electrical contractor NRC Services has been responsible for the full design, installation and commissioning, providing practical implementation, and turning to us for the expertise needed to create the very specific requirements of a healthcare facility as covered in Healthcare Technical Memorandum 03-01.
As the project was in effect a refurbishment, converting offices into teaching spaces, we had to work with the existing mechanical ventilation system as far as possible to optimise cost-efficiency. As is becoming increasingly common, in some areas that involved working with the raised access floor.
Our air movement technical team devised a ventilation strategy combining ceiling mounted diffusers for supply- primarily our square louvre-faced DG- with GECA eggcrate grilles for extract. In the ward, our GFS floor swirl diffusers sit discreetly into the raised access floor to optimise a cool, comfortable environment at “patient” level, efficiently circulating new fresh air and displacing the used air upwards for extraction at high level.
