We are playing a key role in helping deliver specialist care at a landmark new regional centre for Motor Neurone Disease.
The Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease, at Seacroft Hospital in Leeds, is the legacy of the rugby international Rob Burrow who lost his battle with MND in 2024. He and his consultant Dr Agam Jung came up with the idea to provide a “first of its kind” holistic environment that combined specialist services and support under one roof.

Built by I&G for Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, the Centre targeted BREEAM Excellent with a fabric-first and energy efficient approach.
To meet that aim, building services engineers HPI Building Services worked closely with Gilberts to deliver appropriate ventilation to I&G’s brief.
Throughout the central atrium and adjoining wings of the two-storey building, our DG louvre-faced ceiling diffusers have been chosen to provide the air supply with GHV double deflection grilles extracting the used air.
The louvre-faced diffusers supply air in four-way blow option to achieve a clean horizontal distribution of air in all directions. The diffuser design facilitates its integration into almost any ceiling type. This flexibility gave standardisation to the ceiling air movement penetrations throughout the building, helping HPI optimise installation cost efficiency.
The high ventilation area and directional adjustability provided by the double deflection grilles will help optimise removal or airborne pollutants- critical in such a specialist healthcare environment where patient immune systems are often compromised.
Ben Brady, HPI Project Engineer, elaborated, “The Rob Burrow Centre for MND has been designed to a fabric first approach, with scope to adapt in the future. Gilberts worked closely with the whole design team to deliver a configuration for the building services that would provide comfortable surroundings for patients and their families whilst meeting the strict air quality controls required in healthcare environments.”
We’re proud to specialise in projects just like this. Our client portfolio includes Papworth Hospital, St Lukes Bradford’s new surgical day care unit, Rowan View mental health unit, Wirral University Teaching Hospital Trust’s High Dependency Unit (HDU), the histopathology laboratory at the Royal Victoria Hospital and Rutherford Diagnostics Centre.
